The North Texas Jazz Festival in Addison is a collaboration between the UNT Jazz Studies Division and the Town of Addison. Together we host an annual jazz festival that includes performances by top UNT ensembles, major jazz headliners, and outstanding school groups from across the United States.
The entire festival takes place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Addison, TX. It is an invitational festival, and middle school, high school, community college and university groups submit an application and recording for consideration to participate each year. The top group entries in the big band, combo, and vocal jazz categories are invited for the weekend. Groups perform a set and are adjudicated by top names in jazz education, receive a clinic from a UNT jazz faculty member, and attend master classes presented by UNT jazz faculty.
While the festival is non-competitive, a group from each category is selected each day by the adjudicators to perform on the evening pro concert. In addition, outstanding soloists are recognized at the Awards Presentation Ceremony on Saturday at 5pm.
Noted jazz film collector Hal Miller is on hand throughout the festival, interacting with attendees and presenting rare jazz films from his personal archive.
The festival has just completed its seventh year, and hundreds of schools have participated in this outstanding event.
The 2009 festival includes over 50 groups representing 20 states across the US!
